Painted is an original oil painting by artist Chau Ming Beck.
It is not merely a painting, but rather a slowly opening door—
a door that leads into the depths of the universe.
Beyond this threshold, there are no boundaries—
only endless stars, light, and the unknown.
In the moment of gazing, the viewer seems gently drawn away from reality,
entering a silent yet magnificent interstellar journey.
Measuring 63 X54 inches, the work carries more than a visual presence;
it embodies the artist’s contemplation of the cosmos, her imagination,
and an unspoken, deeply internal response.
—And it all began one summer, thirteen years ago.
At that time, a student approached her with a simple question:
“How should I spend my summer vacation?”
After a brief moment of silence,
the artist offered a remarkably simple reply:
“Go to the sky.”
The words were less a suggestion
and more an invitation—
the beginning of a journey.
Throughout that summer, she seemed to move beyond the boundary
between reality and imagination,
entering the vastness of the universe.
There, she witnessed the birth of stars—
Within a young stellar formation region, light was being created.
Newborn stars trembled softly within the glow of hydrogen,
like infants of the cosmos.
They gathered and dispersed,
like a rose slowly unfolding in darkness,
gently surrounded by blue and golden nebulae.
Continuing forward, she entered a deep peacock-blue nebula.
Light was no longer direct, but refracted and diffused.
The lingering glow of yellow stars drifted within it,
while particles of dust floated in suspension,
as if time itself had slowed.
Each fragment of light
felt like a trace left behind by the universe.
And in the distant background,
countless stars remained in quiet presence—
not loud, yet endlessly radiant,
like memories scattered across the Milky Way,
adding immeasurable depth to the cosmos.
The summer passed quietly.
And this silent journey
eventually condensed onto the canvas as Painted.
Upon its completion, the artist stood before the work
and reflected with calm depth:
The universe is vast, and we are small.
Our steps cannot leave the Earth,
and our dreams may never truly reach the galaxy.
Yet this has never been a limitation.
Science seeks to explain the universe;
art allows us to feel it.
The universe may be an endless dream—
and each of us,
within that dream,
searches for a place of our own.
Painted does not attempt to depict the entirety of the cosmos.
Rather, it is a response—
to humanity’s gaze toward the unknown,
to our reverence for immensity,
and to the quiet questioning of our own existence.
Through this work, what we perceive
is not only nebulae and light,
but an opening of perspective—
one that allows us, within the finite,
to touch the infinite.
